FAQs
New-build garden questions, answered
Everything from what's included to paving, booking and looking after your new lawn.
Your garden
What's included in a new-build garden?
Clearing builders' leftovers and stones, loosening the compacted ground, topsoil where needed, levelling, fresh turf laid with neat edges, and the job waste taken away. Your quote lists each stage your garden needs.
Do you deal with builders' rubble?
Surface debris is cleared as standard. Rubble buried deeper, such as brick, block or concrete, is taken out at extra cost and listed separately on your quote.
Will I need extra topsoil?
It depends on your plot. Some new-build gardens have a reasonable layer already, others very little. Topsoil is added where your garden needs more depth, and it's shown on your quote.
Can you do the front garden too?
Yes, fronts as well as backs. Pick the option that fits under Garden size when you fill in the form.
How long does it take?
Most gardens are finished within a day. Bigger plots and gardens with paving can run on.
Paving
Do you lay paving?
Yes, as an optional extra. Paving can be costly, both the slabs and the laying, and it adds time to finishing the garden, so many people start with a lawn and add paving later.
I can't decide about paving. What should I do?
Choose "Not sure" for paving on the form. Your quote will show the garden with paving and without, so you can compare.
Booking and payment
How do I book?
Accept your quote and pay the deposit to hold your date. The deposit is £100, and it comes off your final bill.
When is the rest paid?
The balance is due on the day the work begins. Prices include VAT. Our turf laying terms have the full details.
What if the weather is bad on the day?
Waterlogged or frozen ground isn't right for laying. If the weather means your date has to move, you'll be offered the next suitable day.
Trade and landlords
Do you work for developers and builders?
Yes. Choose Trade or Developer on the form, add your company name and list the plots and timings, and the quote can cover the job as a whole.
I'm a landlord. Can you get a garden ready to let?
Yes. Choose Landlord on the form. A simple, finished lawn is easy for tenants to look after.
Aftercare
How should I water my new lawn?
Give it a good soak once it's laid, then water daily whenever it's dry, until the roots have taken hold. Early morning or evening works best.
When can I mow it?
Once the turf has knitted into the soil and doesn't lift when you gently tug a corner. Keep the mower blades high for the first few cuts.
Is the lawn guaranteed to take?
How well new turf takes depends on things outside our control once it's down, like watering, the weather, the soil and how much it's used, so it can't be guaranteed. Following the aftercare advice gives it the best start.
