New homes south of the river

In Gateshead, new estates have gone up on the western side around Whickham, Ryton and Crawcrook and to the south around Birtley. Across in South Tyneside, there are newer homes in and around Hebburn, Jarrow, Boldon and South Shields.

The landscape changes a lot across the two boroughs, which shows in the gardens: some sit on noticeable slopes, others are flat and open.

Slopes, soil and access

Sloping gardens

Hillside plots in parts of Gateshead often fall away from the house. The levelling stage takes out dips and ridges and keeps an even, gentle fall rather than fighting the natural shape of the land.

Near the coast

Gardens closer to South Shields and the coast can be more open to the weather. New turf here benefits from extra attention to watering while it roots.

FAQs

Questions about your new garden

Our garden slopes. Can it still be turfed?

Yes. Most sloping gardens can be turfed once the surface is levelled into an even fall. Very steep banks may need a different approach, which we'd talk through with you.

Do you cover both Gateshead and South Tyneside?

Yes, both boroughs. Put your postcode on the form and we'll take it from there.
